Naracoorte Lucindale Council Mayor Erika Vickery OAM and Chief Executive Officer Trevor Smart met with Kingston District Council Mayor Kay Rasheed and Chief Executive Officer Nat Traeger to leverage Kingston’s experiences from last year’s Keilira bushfire and coordinate a locally-led recovery to yesterday’s devastating fire.

The Councils are working together to understand the damage from the fire, which burnt across an area of approximately 17,000ha, with significant losses of stock, fencing and infrastructure.

In a joint statement, Mayor Vickery and Mayor Rasheed said: “As our communities start to count the cost, our thoughts go out to those affected by the devastating Blackford-Avenue Range fire.”

Mayor Rasheed said: “We know first-hand the challenges that lie ahead through the long and arduous recovery efforts that continue with our Keilira community, and are committed to a joint recovery process.”

“We will be in contact with impacted property owners through the recovery process, lending support and resources where possible,” the Mayors said.

“A heartfelt thankyou to the CFS, the many volunteers and farmers who are on the frontline fighting the fires and to those who are rallying around the families and communities affected.”

The CFS will hold a community information meeting in the wake of the fires in the Lucindale Memorial Hall at 6pm tonight (12 January).
