Lifetime of Friendship Mosaic

The Lifetime of Friendship Mosaic

Located on an external wall of the Council Office at 29 Holland Street, Kingston SE SA 5275.

The Lifetime of Friendship Mosaic public artwork celebrates the significant contribution the Kingston Country Women's Association (CWA) made to the Kingston community for over 80 years. Examples of the CWA in action from the early days to 2019, when activities in Kingston ceased, area depicted in the design.

From the left, two women knit garments for soldiers, against a WW2 background, establishing the period the Kingston CWA began and the community focus of their activities.

The woman with the pram is positioned in front of the original Kingston CWA building, a central meeting place and venue of CWA activities. Indicative of the 1950s, she represents assistance and amenities the CWA provided the new and nursing mothers. The original CWA building can be seen across the road, on the left, from where you are standing when viewing the mosaic.

At a street stall are two women, one buying produce from the other, recognising the fundraising activities of the CWA, an ongoing activity, represented here as the 1960s and 70s.

Indicative of more recent times, the appearance of the two women packing boxes represents the preparation of 'pamper packs' for bushfire survivors.

Finally, two seated women, cuppa in hand, acknowledge the value of CWA fellowship. The sewing box and crochet work background recognise the keeping alive and sharing of traditional skills. These women represent the conclusion of Kingston CWA activities as they look back over a lifetime of friendship, whilst celebrating a job well done.

This significant public artwork evokes a sense of community pride and is an inspiration for present and future residents.

Renowned mosaic artist Mike Tye designed the work, with support from local resident and project mentee, Katherine Lisk.

This project was made possible through the generous contributions of the former Kingston Branch of the CWA, Kingston District Council, Arts South Australia and the invaluable work of passionate, dedicated community members.
