Shine On Kingston! Program                

January 14 – 16, 2022

In addition to encouraging the whole town to add lights and SHINE ON for the duration of the celebrations, the program includes:

1. In the District Hall, Agnes St:  January 12th – 18th

  • an Australian National Maritime Museum touring exhibition, Remarkable Boats.
  • a display of excerpts from the Cape Jaffa Light station Logbooks
  • a display of our own Lighthouse archival material
  • a display of items from Verne McLaren's collection
  • an exhibition of documents about Nicolas Baudin's exploration in this area

2. In the small space studio, Agnes St: January 13th – 17th

  • exhibition of entries in the inaugural Lighthouse Art Prize (2D, 3D (sculpture) and Photography categories) - all with the LIGHTHOUSE theme.

3In the Bay and on the Foreshore in front of the Lighthouse

  • The Sailing Club regatta will be held on Saturday in front of the Lighthouse
  • Display of Marine Rescue boats
  • Sandcastle building and Treasure Hunt
  • Adelaide Kite Flyers kite flying display

4. At the Lighthouse

  • Food: Lighthouse Keeper's Breakfast, Lighthouse Long Lunch, Lighthouse Keeper's BBQ
  • Drinks: Local wines
  • **Lantern workshop, with professional artist, in preparation for the Lantern Parade
  • Costumed actors
  • Guest Speakers: -  Ian Clifford, President, Lighthouses of Australia, Garry Searle, author of “First Order: Australia’s Highway of Lighthouses”, Robert Mock, instrumental in the saving of the light station platform, Steve Saville, discoverer of the Nyora wreck, Graham Rayner, last lightkeeper at CJL, Mark Rothall, rescues in recent times
  • Other guests:  possible additional speakers - John Nicholson, author of “Cape Jaffa: its memorial to seafarers,fisherman,lightkeepers”, Anne Daw, daughter of Verne McLaren, Australian Maritime Safety Authority (AMSA) rep, Sarah-Jane Lakshman, Tim Nguyen, Chance Brothers rep
  • Tours of Lighthouse constantly
  • Dr Darren Peacock, CEO, NTSA, will emcee the Friday night dinner for lightkeeper descendants and special guests, as well as be in attendance on site during Saturday
  • Illuminating the Lighthouse, a different colour each night
  • Music: Graham Hugo (Country) in evening, acoustic guitar inside Lighthouse, Ukulele group Mosquito Plains Strummers, Community choir singing sea shanties. Background music throughout the day
  • Night Tours every night from the 15th (first night the CJL light was exhibited) to the 24th (official opening of Lighthouse in 1872)

5Kingston Museum, Cooke St 

  • exhibition of marine/fishing materials and relevant documents

6Along Marine Parade, in the evening

  • A Lantern parade from the jetty to the Lighthouse, led by bagpiper; dramatic finish to parade

7. From the Lighthouse to Cape Jaffa: January 16th

  • Charter trips to the platform
  • 4WD drives to the cottage ruins
