Dredging Update - Cape Jaffa Marina

Published 16th February 2026

Maritime Constructions have now completed a second campaign of dredging works at Cape Jaffa. Council was fortunate to receive funding through the Thriving Regions Fund to undertake additional dredging operations on the marina channel and the western side of the groyne.

There was a total of 24,809 cubic metres of sand bypassed from the marina channel in the first campaign which enabled the marina to be open prior to Christmas. Then with additional funding, a further 27,288 cubic metres of sand was bypassed from both the channel and the western side of the groyne to allow catchment of expected winter sand drift. Council would have preferred to dredge more on the western side but had to work within its defined budget.

It's important to remember that this work was completed following the removal of approximately 50,000 cubic metres of sand by South East Coastal Care Initiative in late 2025.

Since the marina was re-opened, coupled with free boat launch fees, Council has noticed an increased use of the boat ramp compared to previous years. Council will continue to advocate and work with key stakeholders towards long-term solutions for sand management at Cape Jaffa to enable the marina to be open and navigable all year round.

Council is most appreciative of Minister Claire Scriven for her support in making these funds possible and for supporting the commercial and recreational fishing sectors and the wider community.
